45 bands that are anything but top 40

For anyone who's ever wondered what Seattle's Folklife Festival would be like if it rocked, it's about time to check out the Capitol Hill Block Party, a two-day extravaganza featuring more than 45 of the best new local and national rock and hip-hop artists as well as arts and crafts vendors.

This year's music lineup includes everything from such can't-miss big-name acts as Silversun Pickups (Main Stage, Friday, 9:45 p.m.), The Saturday Knights (Main Stage, Friday, 4 p.m.) and Against Me! (Main Stage, Saturday, 8:15 p.m.) to the newly discovered PWRFL Power, winner of this year's Block Star Contest.

Armed only with his acoustic guitar and quirky tunes such as "Tomato Song" and "Heaven, a Dog Called Dad, and Rainbow," this Japanese exchange student/singer-songwriter beat out many much more rocking bands to have the chance to perform on the Block Party's Main Stage (Saturday, 2 p.m.).

Although he just began writing songs last year, PWRFL Power already has a lot of experience under his belt performing in coffee houses from New York City to Japan, so his set should be fairly polished.

In addition to the Main Stage, located at the corner of 10th Avenue and East Pike Street, there will be an outdoor Vera Project Stage (on 11th Avenue between East Pike and Pine streets), featuring Speaker Speaker, Dyme Def, Fleet Foxes, The Pharmacy, Boat and many others.

Neumos is also hosting many of the performances, including The Cave Singers, Gabriel Teodros, The Trucks and The Blakes.

Part of the proceeds from this year's event will be donated to Home Alive and The Vera Project. The festivities start at 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $15 per day if purchased through Neumos' box office or $20 online at www.TicketsWest.com.

Providing a reprieve from the fresh air and high-altitude hip-hop and pop-rock of the Capitol Hill Block Party is Studio Seven's Rockfest. It will feature a plethora of heavier rocking though at times no less melodic bands such as Amnerata, Falling Grace (winner of the regional WorldFolk Battle of the Bands), SXY, Off Centered, Your Divine Tragedy, The Centre Cannot Hold and many others (Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28, 5 p.m., all ages, $8 adv, $10 dos).
