Officer E.H. Johnson (right) listens as the driver (center, right) of a Mercury Sable, which crashed into the University Village Bartell Drugs yesterday around 6:20 p.m., speaks with family about the incident.

There were no reported injuries.

The man allegedly mistook the gas pedal for the brake while parking his Mercury Sable in the handicap parking space in front of the store.

He had a hearing impairment and a handicap permit on his car.

"I heard it and looked up, and it had already happened," said David Pulliam, a Bartell Drugs cashier.

Clerks immediately directed customers to the back of the store, he added.

The car seemed to be stopped by the bottom of the window frame, cashier Allison Camp said.

The driver was going to the store to buy chocolate malt balls before returning home.

After temporarily closing a few registers, Bartell's continued business for the evening.

The store will remain open.
