While most students are spending this week enjoying the nice weather, studying for finals and packing their things for summer, the Washington track and field team is preparing for the biggest meet of the season, and for two seniors, this meet will be especially emotional.

UW’s Norris Frederick leaps to gain a win in the men’s long jump competition during the Ken Shannon Invitational in May. In two weeks, the UW track meet will be at the NCAA Championships.
June 6-8, the Huskies will compete in the NCAA outdoor championships, held in Sacramento, Calif. After last week’s West Regional meet, the Huskies qualified 14 athletes to attend the most prestigious collegian meet in the country.
Two of those 14 Huskies are seniors Ryan Brown and Ashley Lodree. For both, the meet will mark not only the end of another season but also the end of their time at the UW. The meet will be a bittersweet ending for the two seniors. After four years of hard work and dedication, Brown and Lodree say they will be ready to end their time as Huskies.
“I’m kind of relieved,” Brown said. “I’m not really a sentimental person, so this meet will just mark the closing of a chapter in my life.”
And what a chapter it will have been for Brown. One of the most decorated athletes in UW track and field history, Brown enters the NCAAs as the one to beat. Already this season he has gone undefeated in his signature event, the 800-meter dash, including a win at the Pac-10s a couple of weeks ago and a win last weekend at the NCAA West Regional championships.
“I’ve just been placed in good situations by my coach,” Brown said. “I’ve also been really lucky.”
A fifth-year senior, Brown has had a long road with the Huskies.
Brown has done nothing but excel on the track. Last year he caught the eyes of many when he won the NCAA Championships in the 800 meters. Now, a year later, he will grace the track that made him a champion once again.
“I don’t really feel any pressure because I’m the reigning champion,” Brown said. “I’m just going to run and whatever happens, happens. This is a whole new season.”
The NCAA championships will also be the last meet for Lodree as a Husky. A sprints and hurdles specialist, Lodree entered her senior season the top returning hurdler in the NCAA. In her time here at the UW, she has collected five NCAA All-America honors and has a chance to earn her sixth one, which would be a UW record.
“I’m just going to focus on winning; that’s my main goal,” Lodree said. “I’m not going to worry too much about the other things.”
Winning will definitely be within Lodree’s reach as well. Last weekend at the regional championships, Lodree won her first-ever post season victory in the 100-meter hurdles.
“That race gave me a lot of confidence,” Lodree said. “It was a good indicator of what I can run at nationals.”
Other Huskies will also have their eyes on a national title. Norris Frederick will look to claim a title in both of his events, the long jump and the high jump. Also in the mix will be freshman Scott Roth, who has been highly ranked ever since stepping foot onto Montlake.
