The fastest way to understand this band (if that's possible) is to go to YouTube and search for The Saturday Knights. The second video that will appear is an 'interview' done by The Stranger, and the accompanying description pretty much sums them up, "The most incomprehensible interview with a band ever. Really. EVER."
It's probably one of the most entertaining/incoherent videos on the site and that's an achievement considering 1. the glut of competition and 2. the band strives to keep the audience extremely excited without really knowing why they're so giddily confused: think puppies.
In the aforementioned video, Tilson, one of two MCs, explains (more or less) that the other lead vocalist, Barfly, made the moon. When I confronted Tilson with the possibility that some don't believe this, he was unreceptive.
"Barfly did make the moon, and I'll fight anybody who says otherwise," said Tilson.
As a matter of fact when I first sat down to talk with him, Tilson said he had an exclusive piece of information for me, which turned out to be that he liked my eyes.
Based out of Seattle, the group — a three piece filled out by DJ Suspense with (sometimes) love from guitarist Michael Jaworski (also of Seattle band The Cops) — released its self-titled EP in Seattle about a month ago. It came out nationally April 24.
"We wanna put you in a good mood," said Tilson. "That's what The Saturday Knights are all about."
He also wants all women to leave their boyfriends or, and more specifically, girlfriends, to come join the band. He suggested this article be titled, Now Hiring Female Knights. (I seriously considered doing this, but eventually decided against it, as it had absolutely no relevance to the rest of the piece).
This May the band will be playing Sasquatch, in between Hold Steady and Mixmaster Mike. Preparations seem to be going extremely well. According to Tilson the DJ is off parasailing in the Alps, and Barfly is starting a squirrel kennel.
Because Tilson is functionally illiterate (his words not mine, although if you're truly illiterate what are the chances you know the word for it?) he drew a special message to all the students at the UW that he wanted me to pass on, which is included here. It's essentially a plea for a female tutor in all subjects, because he says he thinks he'll need to be able to read and write pretty soon.
He's made it this far though, and I hope whoever gets the job doesn't change him too much. The Saturday Knights right now are the kind of fun your mother warned you against because when she indulged in it at your age she ended up with you.
"I want to say everything, and nothing at the same time," said Tilson.
If the track "45" is anything to base future predictions off of, the LP due out this fall will say everything and then some.
