GREEN LAKE: Spuds

If you are watching your weight or looking for a healthy place to eat, then Spuds is definitely not the place for you. It's fried fish and chips and greasy everything — but that's the appeal.

"I stay in shape by running around the lake every week, but sometimes I just can't resist. The scallops are my guilty pleasure," patron Allison Mann said.

Spuds is fast-food beach-style, but a whole lot better. Crispy, fresh fish, thick fries, prawns, shrimp cocktail appetizers and a variety of condiments are what can be found at this eatery. It's not fussy or fancy — it's just a good decent restaurant that has a meal for every budget.

"It's basically a hole in the wall. I love it," David Lovosic said.

A favorite among many, Spuds has been a landmark in Greenlake since 1935. It was bought out by the Ivar's restaurant chain not long ago, but has kept the original recipe. The food is fried when ordered, the fish is never frozen, and the fries are perfect — not too crispy, but not too floppy.

The place is small and there is little seating, but if they're crowded, sit at the tables outside or take it to go and enjoy it by the lake.
