The Washington men's tennis team notched its first Pac-10 win this weekend with a victory over No. 60 Stanford. Despite being upset on Friday by No. 51 California, the Huskies were able to close out the weekend on a high note with their 6-1 victory over the Cardinal.
"This weekend was really about the peaks and valleys of college tennis," coach Matt Anger said. "It was in the back of our minds that we didn't do as well as we should have against Cal, and so we knew we had to be sharp today [against Stanford]."
The match against Cal was a rough one, as the UW was unable to capitalize on an early lead to close out a win. After battling to take the doubles point with wins from its No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams, the UW men looked poised to dominate in singles as well, especially after senior co-captain Alex Slovic breezed through his match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cal's Pierre Mouillon. Cal showed that they weren't about to go down without a fight, as Daniel Sebescen defeated Derek Drabble 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, and Kallim Stewart took out senior Mike Ricks 7-6, 6-3 at No. 6.
Junior co-captain Andy Kuharszky's 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles put the Huskies ahead 3-2, meaning they needed only one more win to take the match. Although Daniel Chu and Patrik Fischer took their opponents to third sets, both were defeated, giving Washington its third consecutive conference loss.
Going into Saturday's match against Stanford, the men knew they were going to have to play their best. Dropping the doubles point didn't seem like an auspicious start, as the lone victory of the No. 3 doubles team of Kuharszky and Drabble wasn't enough for the Huskies. The doubles result wasn't the only thing that was reversed in the Stanford match, however — the UW went on to sweep all six singles matches for a 6-1 victory.
Fischer was the first to avenge his loss of the previous day with a quick 6-2, 6-1 win. Ricks and Drabble followed him off the court with speedy straight sets victories. Kuharszky looked poised to clinch the match after winning his first set, but was forced to a second set tiebreaker where he trailed 5-3 before rallying behind the cheers of the home crowd to take the match 6-3, 7-6 and give the Huskies the win.
This left seniors Slovic and Chu battling on the No. 1 and No. 2 singles courts, where each rallied from first set losses to force third set super tiebreakers. The doubles partners earned parallel wins with 11-9 victories in their tiebreakers.
"Yesterday was an unfortunate loss, but we came back solid today," Chu said. "We can build on this."
The Huskies continue Pac-10 play this weekend when they take on Arizona and Arizona State at home.
