UW Talks Back

In an effort to act in the best interest of all passengers, a Continental Airlines pilot kicked a 16-year-old girl off a 10-hour flight from Newark to Honolulu after she had a severe coughing fit before take-off. Did he do the right thing?

"If she had a real medical problem, she would not have been able to get help. It's always best to err on the side of caution."

Greg Brey

sophomore, geography

"I'm glad that Continental provided for her accommodations ... but I'm not sure that she should have been kicked off the flight. If a doctor OK'd her to fly and felt assured that she wouldn't be a threat ... then it seems like removing her from the plane was an overreaction."

Rachel Malinen

sophomore, Spanish

"Seems a bit much, especially with a doctor onboard saying it's OK, but airlines are airlines these days."

Lowell Neal

senior, pre-engineering

"I think it is kind of ridiculous. With a doctor onboard saying she'd be OK, you would think the pilot would trust his judgment."

Peter Carlson

sophomore, pre-Sciences
