The Husky baseball team got roughed up a little bit on the road at Utah Valley State over the weekend, but avoided the sweep in the series finale Saturday when the team went off on the Wolverines for the 20-7 victory.
A single run-filled inning made all the difference in each of the last two games of the three-game series in Orem, Utah between UVS and the Huskies.
Friday, the Wolverines' (19-25) 12-run hitfest during the second inning put the Huskies (21-20) in a hole too deep for them to climb out of. Washington made a strong attempt at a comeback before eventually losing 17-9.
"The great part about that game was we came back, kept playing hard and no one gave up," coach Ken Knutson said. "We outscored them 9-3 in the rest of the game."
Saturday, the Huskies entered the ninth inning ahead 9-6. Then the Washington bats sought revenge, pounding out 11 runs to finish off the 20-7 win.
"We just sort of beat them up," Knutson said. "We scored a lot and scored often, then finally just took them out."
The shallow fences at Orem proved even shorter due to both the altitude of the location and favorable weather.
For the second time in two weeks, the Huskies came into the final game looking at being swept, but found the motivation to get the win. And like deja vu from last weekend against USC, pitchers Jason Erickson and Nick Hagadone did the work from the mound to help their teams get at least one win on the weekend.
The starter, Erickson (2-1) earned the win with five innings of work in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits.
In the sixth, Knutson brought in Hagadone, whom he said has proven again and again that he will get the save, no matter how long it takes. Hagadone did what he does best and threw four innings to earn his seventh save of the season.
With two home runs apiece, junior Matt Hague and sophomore Danny Cox led the Huskies at the plate Saturday. Cox batted in seven runs as he went 3-6. Hague went 4-6 with four RBI and extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Several players who have not seen much of the field made returns to the lineup in the series. One of the biggest returnees, junior Matt Stevens, started in both Friday's and Saturday's games. Stevens went 4-6 at the plate Saturday and stole two bases.
"He's been getting better at practice and we can see it," Knutson said, "so hopefully now he can contribute, and he's ready to go."
After an ankle injury benched him for the last two weeks, sophomore Bradley Boyer returned to his position at second base and also contributed at his spot near the top of the lineup setting up the big hitters. Saturday, Boyer knocked three hits, including a two-run home run, and batted in five runs.
"Boyer's a vocal player, and he kind of gets you going," Hague said. "He's a good player all around, and its good to have that guy back, too."
The Huskies, who are 6-6 in Pac-10 games this year, resume conference play against Oregon State \Friday at Safeco Field.
