Men's Tennis: Huskies gear up for Pac-10 tournament

Every member of the Washington men's tennis team has been playing and practicing hard all season, even those who haven't been regular starters on match day. The depth of the lineup and the dedication of every one of its members propelled the Huskies to a 16-6 record and a third place finish in the Pac-10 this season.

Senior Alex Slovic earned his 83rd doubles and 93rd singles win last Saturday in the Pac-10 finale win over Oregon. The Huskies start competing today in the Pac-10 Conference Championships held in Ojai, California through Sunday.

But the team's work isn't done yet. This weekend, the Pac-10 championships in Ojai, Calif., will be an opportunity for both veteran players and those with less match experience to hone their mental and physical games and show how much they have improved this season.

"It's a great event for everybody," coach Matt Anger said. "Those who've been playing get a chance to play guys who they might not have faced during the season. Then there are some guys who haven't played in as many matches, and this tournament will help give them playing experience, which will help especially if we face these teams in the postseason."

The match will start today for all brackets and continue through the weekend, with champions in each crowned Sunday.

There are two singles and two doubles draws in the Ojai tournament. The Pac-10 singles draw is composed of 32 players, with each team entering its top four players. The Husky entrants will be seniors Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu, junior Andy Kuharszky and freshman Patrik Fischer.

Slovic, ranked 87th in the nation, is only two wins away from tying All-American Matt Hanlin for first in career doubles and singles victories at Washington.

It will not be easy for the Huskies though, as the Pac-10 boasts some of the nation's best talent. Three conference players, No. 8 Benjamin Kohlloeffel and No. 27 Haythem Abid from UCLA and California's No. 30 Pierre Mouillon, are all ranked in the top 30.

In the invitational singles draw, the Huskies will send more singles players: senior co-captain Michael Ricks, sophomore Andy Gerst and freshmen David Chu and Derek Drabble.

In each of the two doubles draws, the UW will have two teams participating. In the Pac-10 draw, the Huskies' doubles teams will be Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu, the No. 59 pair in the nation, and Fischer and Ricks.

Their main competition will be the pairings of Kohlloeffel and Philipp Gruendler from UCLA and Matt Bruch and Blake Muller of Stanford.

In the invitational draw Kuharszky will partner with Drabble, and Gerst will play with David Chu.
