PIONEER SQUARE: Elliott Bay Book Company

The creak of the wood floors, worn by more than 30 years of traffic, invites shoppers into The Elliott Bay Book Company. Founded in 1973, this independent family-owned bookstore has an extensive selection to satisfy everyone's tastes.

Holding more than 150,000 new and used titles, it is easy to get lost among the smell of leather bindings and the seemingly endless space.

"I always wander in the bookstore not knowing what I want to buy, but always end up picking up the perfect book," frequent shopper April Peeler said.

Aside from the overwhelming inventory, Elliot Bay's employees are knowledgeable and friendly. When asked why they love working at the shop, all say they enjoy the energetic staff and helping out the eclectic customers.

After browsing the bookshelves and making a selection, the Elliot Bay Café, located downstairs, is the perfect place for a coffee and pastry to enjoy while reading.

"It's relaxing and a great place to hang out on those rainy Seattle days," customer Doris Canning said.

Whether it's for a quick bite or for hours of browsing, the Elliott Bay Book Company is a wonderful place to get lost in literary indulgence.
