Today the UW's Earth Club will host the Earth Fair, giving students a chance to check out environmentally conscious products and distributors, among other activities.
"Our theme is 'simplify', as in 'simplify your life,'" said senior Laura Knudsen, Earth Club coordinator for the event. "It's good to be a conscious consumer."
Whole Foods is one of the many sponsors that will be present today, promoting organic foods and helping students recognize the benefits of understanding the products they buy.
"There will also be an energy booth, and UW Recycling will be in attendance," Knudsen said.
A wide variety of organic and cost-effective products will be featured at the event, offering insight into a new market. Organizers hope students will realize that it does not have to be expensive to explore the various organic foods out there.
"We feel that this is an appropriate event for college students trying to save money and save the Earth," Knudsen said.
Many of the booths present today will give UW students a more sensible idea of how they can be health and environmentally cognizant, and the Earth Club is expecting a respectable turnout, event organizers said.
"We live in a rather affluent society, where people can make a difference with each specific choice they make in their daily purchases," said senior Erinn Unger, Earth Club co-president. "Consumers need to be educated on how much sway their decisions can make."
The Earth Club hopes to give students a better idea of what goes into their purchases and show alternative choices they can make on a personal level.
"The theme 'simplify' means that we're aiming to show kids that they can know what's inside of what they buy, unlike many items that are purchased at the average supermarket," Unger said.
