Three Huskies rounded out the weekend's events in California with NCAA regional qualifying marks. The Washington track and field team split up their squads and headed south to compete in the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, held in Berkeley, and the Mt. SAC relays, held in Walnut, CA.
Junior Norris Frederick and senior Myrriah Swago earned NCAA provisional qualifying marks at the prestigious Mt. SAC relays, where some of the best field-event specialists in the country competed. Junior Alex Harcourt followed suit at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, which was host to some of the premier collegiate sprinting talent.
Frederick accomplished his goal this weekend at the Mt. SAC relays.
"I want to get my regional qualifying mark," Frederick said in an earlier interview.
The junior from Seattle did just that. He cleared 6 feet 103/4 inches in the high jump, earning him a fourth-place finish against the talented competition, and a personal best for the four-time All-American.
Swago also earned a regional qualifying mark in the pole vault at the Mt. SAC relays. The senior from Laguna Hills, Calif., topped a height of 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches to tie for fourth place and earn her first bid to the NCAA meet in June. Swago's performance also earned her the No. 7 spot on the UW all-time list.
Meanwhile, in Northern California, Washington's fastest were competing at the seventh annual Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Harcourt was the highlight of the meet, earning a regional qualifying mark in the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.73 seconds. Already catching the eyes of many in the indoor season, when he upset a former Olympian in the event, it was no surprise when Harcourt took the win at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in the 400.
Other notable performances at the meet came from sophomore Syreeta Martin, who won the women's 400-meter hurdles, senior Kira Harrison, who came in second in the 800-meter dash, and senior Kinyatta Leonhart, who came in third in the 400. Following Harcourt on the men's side, senior Tim Freeman came in second in the 800, while juniors James Frederickson and Kyle Still came in second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles.
The three NCAA provisional qualifying marks earned this weekend brought the Washington track and field team to a jaw-dropping total of 30 this season, with three meets remaining in the regular outdoor season.
