The Daily Files: Thousands rally against nuclear war

A look backward in time through the yellowing pages of newsprint archives shows what The Daily and the UW looked like 25 years ago this month.

Thousands rally against nuclear war

They knew they were there for a good reason, so they didn't mind the cold fingers, damp hair and hailstones.

Wintery weather seemed to be only a minor inconvenience to the people who rallied and marched for peace at the "Call for Armistice" demonstration at Seattle Center.

About 12,000 people showed up Saturday to "vote with their feet" for an end to the arms race. Some were veterans of Vietnam and civil rights demonstrations of the '60s. For others, this was their first demonstration.

Colorful signs and banners bobbed throughout the jam-packed Flag Pavilion, amidst the open umbrellas.

"Stop the arms race, not the human race," one sign pleaded. Others called for "Employment not deployment," "Cut Reagan," and "Your children might want children."

A 15-foot missile made of lightweight silver fabric cruised through the throng.

The moderator of the day's program, Dorie Warbington, praised the exuberant crowd for its energy, power and "thumbs-up" attitude.
