In the last home match of their college careers, the three seniors of the Husky men's tennis team gave their fans something to remember them by, as they led the team to 6-1 victories over Arizona State and Arizona this weekend.
Alex Slovic, Michael Ricks, and Daniel Chu have all been invaluable contributors to the team during their four years at Washington, and they have helped lead the Huskies to two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and the first Pac-10 championship in program history.
"Mike has been a starter for three years, Daniel is sixth for career wins at [the] UW, and now Alex is third for career wins," coach Matt Anger said. "We wouldn't have the success we've had without them."
The Huskies ended their home season on a high note, dominating their opponents in both matches of the weekend. Against Arizona State Friday, wins from Ricks and Patrik Fischer at No. 2 doubles and Andy Kuharszky and Derek Drabble at No. 3 gave them the doubles point and the early lead. Since the doubles point had already been decided, Slovic and Chu played a tiebreaker to decide the No. 1 match, and were narrowly defeated 6-5 (5).
Seniors Ricks and Slovic were merciless in their singles matches, coming off the court one after another with 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1 victories, respectively. Kuharszky clinched the match for the UW with a 6-0, 6-4 defeat of ASU's Wes Miller. Two of the younger players, Fischer and Drabble, took a little longer to finish their matches, but both emerged with straight-set victories. Chu, the lone player remaining on the court, fought hard against ASU's Matt Brooklyn, but ultimately fell 6-3, 7-5.
After taking Saturday off, the Huskies returned Sunday for their final home match of the season. For only the second time this season, the Seattle sun shone down on the courts and the men were able to play outside at Bill Quillian Stadium.
"It's a lot more interesting to play outside," Chu said. "Between the wind, the sun and the heat, it's never easy."
The Huskies used the elements to their advantage, throwing up lobs into the sun and executing lethal drop volleys to overwhelm their Arizona opponents. The men jumped out to the lead by taking the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, then continued to dominate on the singles courts.
Fischer was first off the court this time with a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory, avenging his earlier loss with Ricks in their doubles match. Slovic showed his prowess in his final home match as a Husky, crushing Arizona's Claudio Christen with powerful serves and crisp backhands.
The other two seniors stuck around for a little longer, with Ricks and Chu finishing out the match as the last two Huskies left on court. Ricks defeated opponent Alex Labrosse 6-4, 6-3 for his ninth dual-match victory of the season. Despite an early lead, Chu fell to Arizona's Bruno Alcala, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 10-7.
"All the seniors had good wins today: Mike in singles, Daniel in doubles, and Alex in both singles and doubles," Anger said. "We've done some good things with them as a team, and they'll always be linked to that success."
