Washington's No. 12 softball team (28-11, 4-4 Pac-10) opened their Oregon road trip with three straight wins, but Sunday's disappointing loss prevented the Huskies from scoring a perfect weekend.
"That was a tough way, probably the worst way, to end a really good weekend," coach Heather Tarr said.
After Thursday's 6-1 non-conference victory over Portland State, the Huskies used overpowering offense, matched with a phenomenal effort from pitcher Danielle Lawrie, to upset No. 10 Oregon (37-7, 3-4 Pac-10) 7-2 Friday.
The Dawgs, who tallied 11 hits that day, struck first in the second inning when Lawrie helped her own cause with her sixth home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field.
Dena Tyson hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, pushing the Husky lead to 4-0 and providing plenty of cushion for Lawrie.
The Ducks scored a run and threatened more in the bottom half of the sixth, but Lawrie induced a weak ground ball right back to her, thwarting the Oregon rally.
Washington tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the seventh, using a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double by Marnie Koziol to bring the UW lead to 7-1.
Lawrie struck out 15 batters in the complete game victory, allowing two runs on six hits while moving to 16-6 for the season.
"We've for sure seen some improvement on offense," Tarr said. "I think we really understand what we have to do to win games."
Saturday, the Huskies traveled to Corvallis and picked up a 3-1 win over the No. 16 team, Oregon State (33-13, 5-3 Pac-10).
Alyson McWherter, who picked up her first collegiate hit against Portland State Thursday, singled in the third inning to score on Nicole Moojen and put the UW up 1-0.
Tyson supplied the rest of the UW offense. Her RBI single in the fourth made it a 2-0 game, then the senior from Corona, Calif., belted her second home run of the weekend, and 11th of the season, in the top of the seventh, upping the Husky lead to 3-1.
Caitlin Noble worked four innings to pick up the win and move to 11-3 on the year, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out two. Lawrie pitched the final three innings to pick up her third save of the season.
The Huskies appeared well on their way to victory Sunday, with homers by Lawrie and Tyson providing the UW with a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
That's when Washington ran into trouble. Lawrie loaded the bases and forced in a run with a walk and three hit batters, chasing her from the game. Noble took over in the circle, gave up a two-run single, then eventually loaded the bases and walked in the winning run, giving OSU the 5-4 victory.
"We've been playing with fire lately, and teams haven't been capitalizing," Tarr said. "OSU finally did. We're going to take this game as a lesson, and we know what we have to do to prevent this kind of loss in the future."
