Women's Tennis: Injured Huskies take on Oregon

Two days after claiming their second victory of the season against Gonzaga, UW's women's tennis team is right back into the heat of competition with today's non-conference match against Pac-10 rival Oregon.

Starting at 12 p.m. at Bill Quillian Stadium, the Huskies will try and win two in a row in their dual match season.

UW (2-13, 03 Pac-10) is looking to carry the momentum of Sunday's win into today's match, rather than dwelling on the string of losses that preceded it.

"It will be great to come into this match [against Oregon] with a win," coach Jill Hultquist said.

Prior to the win over Gonzaga, the women had been on a six-match losing streak, largely due to a roster depleted to the bare minimum by injury and questions of eligibility. With only six players available to play in any given match, and even some of these burdened with health concerns, there is no margin for further injury. The players have been forced to play through pain while at the same time taking care not to injure themselves to the point of being unable to play.

"We've got girls who aren't able to practice during the week, but who show up and play hard in their matches," Hultquist said. "They're really toughing it out."

Even with the difficulties that have plagued their lineup, many of the losses suffered by the UW women have been closer than might have been hoped for. The match against Washington State at the beginning of spring break was just one of those in which the women came tantalizingly close to victory.

The UW started off by claiming the doubles point, something that has proven elusive for the team this season. Despite pushing the Washington State players to three sets on four out of the six singles courts, UW was unable to claim more than one of those matches and fell to the Cougars, 4-3.

"The match against Washington State was close," Hultquist said. "I was proud of our doubles, but we haven't been able to clinch the singles matches that we need to win."

The match against Oregon will require the UW women to fight even harder to come out with a victory. Oregon is currently No. 23 in the International Tennis Association rankings and comes into the match with a 10-5 record.

"Oregon also has only six players, but they're fighters," Hultquist said. "The Oregon girls have great attitudes, and their spirit is so big. They're always a tough team to play."

The Ducks feature three great doubles tandems, and have gone 17-1 in doubles in dual matches on the year. They are led by the No. 28 pairing in the nation, Dominika Dieskova and Anna Cecilia Olivos.

Admission to the match is free, and free pizza and soda will be provided to fans.
