Women’s basketball coach let go

The UW has decided not to renew women’s basketball coach June Daugherty’s contract as well as those of her staff. The athletic department will immediately begin a nationwide search for a replacement.

June Daugherty has been a prominent representative of Husky athletics for more than a decade,” said Todd Turner, director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “She worked very hard to ensure that her student-athletes had exceptional experiences at the University of Washington.”

Turner also maintained the former coach was well respected.

We hold her in the highest personal regard,” he said. “In spite of her considerable talents, diligent efforts and our personal respect for her and her staff, our team has not achieved the on-the-court results that inspire excitement and support from Husky fans everywhere.”

The contracts come to a close on March 31. Amongst those staff members leaving will be June’s husband and assistant coach, Mike Daugherty, as well as assistant coaches Janet Soderberg and Kellie Lewis-Jay.

Despite the loss of her contract, Daugherty said she is thankful for her UW coaching experience.

I would like to thank everyone that supported and enjoyed our basketball teams over 11 successful seasons at the University of Washington,” Daugherty said. “It has been a pleasure making so many lifelong friends among our supporters and our players.”

Yet, the loss of contract does not come without disappointment.

It is disappointing that the University of Washington has chosen not to renew our contract,” Daugherty said. “We were looking forward to coaching a talented group of returning players and the top-10 recruiting class we signed to play at the University of Washington.”

Daugherty said she will remember her time at the UW fondly.

It has been a privilege to be a Husky,” she said.

Turner also recognized the former coach’s career as positive experience.

We appreciate June’s commitment and service and will support her in every way as she considers future opportunities,” he said.
