The UW men's tennis team spent its spring break working hard and have three solid wins to show for it, including its first road win of the season. After defeating Gonzaga 7-0 at home on the Friday before finals week, the men headed to Hawaii, where they tallied 6-1 and 5-2 wins over Nevada and Hawaii.
"I'm very pleased with our play, especially in Hawaii," coach Matt Anger said. "We weren't perfect, but we were pretty tough down the lineup."
The No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Chu and Alex Slovic was impressive, victorious in all three matches to bring the doubles win total for each player up to 80. Slovic and Chu jointly hold the record for most career doubles wins at the UW, and are No. 31 in the International Tennis Association's doubles rankings.
Slovic and Chu had played together in past seasons, and since they began playing together as doubles this season, they are 7-0, at least in part due to their on-court chemistry.
"It's great to play with Alex," said Chu. "He's very solid to play with."
Doubles has been a strength for the UW this season, with all teams consistently turning in solid performances. Mike Ricks and Patrik Fischer, playing as the No. 2 doubles, have a 10-3 record this season. While the No. 3 doubles team has been mixed up a little throughout the season, Derek Drabble and Andy Kuharszky have played together in six of the past seven matches, and have a 5-1 record at that position.
Anger expects his doubles teams to remain consistent as the season progresses, and doesn't anticipate changes in the lineup anytime soon.
"Doubles play has been improving with this lineup," he said.
Before the trip to Honolulu, Washington was 10-3, with all three losses coming on the road. The win against Nevada did not count as a road win because it was played at a neutral site for both teams, so the victory over Hawaii represented the first true away win of the season.
"I hate the fact that that's a stat, but it was good to get that first win and get the monkey off our back," Anger said. "As a team, we have to learn to play better away from home. But we had our first win away from Seattle against Nevada, which got us halfway there, and then the win against Hawaii was our first away win. We were definitely aware of that."
The team will have to remain solid on the road, with away matches this weekend against USC and UCLA to kick off the Pac-10 season. UW is now 12-3 in dual-match play, and is No. 27 in the nation.
