The Latina sorority Lambda Theta Alpha will name one man the UW’s “Big Man on Campus” tonight.

The sorority will also host a scholarship competition.

Five male contestants will be competing for the chance to win a $200 scholarship, a VIP pass to all Lambda Theta Alpha events in the coming year and the title of “Big Man on Campus.”

The five men chosen from a pool of applicants to take part in tonight’s competition are Travis Boyd, Jonathan Santiago, Luke Kinter, Anthony Greer and Jovon O’Connor.

Three judges will choose who will take home the “Big Man on Campus” title.

Decisions will be made based on a variety of criteria, including academic achievement, community service involvement, formal wear and a question-and-answer session.

The contestants have been in charge of selling tickets for the event and their success in sales will be taken into account as part of the judging process.

The men will also have the opportunity to perform a talent for which they will receive extra points.

Proceeds from the event will go to the sorority’s chosen charity, New Beginnings, a 30-year-old Seattle-based organization that provides services for women and children who have been the victims of domestic violence.

The event is more than just a scholarship competition for men,” sorority member Nora Velazco said. “It’s about raising awareness about domestic violence. We want this to be a constant theme throughout the event.”

There will be a spokesperson from New Beginnings at the event to give further information about the organization and explain how the charity helps victims of domestic violence.

Lambda Theta Alpha aims to raise about $1,000 for the charity from ticket sales and donations at the door.

This is a really big event for us and we’re all really excited about it,” Velazco said. “We hope that it will be a great success and become an annual event.”
