The University of Washington men's tennis team reigned over the purple tennis courts of Nordstrom Tennis Center this weekend, dropping only one of eighteen matches as they defeated Oregon 7-0 and San Diego State 6-1.
"I'm thrilled with these results," head coach Matt Anger said. "We were solid all weekend."
Part of the UW's success can be attributed to a change in the lineup at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 pairing, made up of UW career doubles wins leaders Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu, swept through both of their matches with 8-5 and 8-3 victories.
"It's great to play with Alex," Chu said. "He's really solid to play with — I always have fun."
Junior Andy Kuharszky and freshman Derek Drabble played together at No. 3 doubles for the first time since the fall and were also victorious in both of their matches, although Sunday's match against San Diego State proved a challenge. After Kuharszky became ill and was forced to leave the court early in the match, the UW was assessed a point and game penalty. After his return, Kuharszky showed no signs of illness as he and Drabble took their opponents to a tiebreaker, claiming the match 8-7 (4).
The No. 2 doubles team of Mike Ricks and Patrik Fischer was as reliable as ever with speedy 8-3 wins in both matches.
"Mike Ricks and Patrik Fischer have been our anchor in doubles," Anger said. "They're working really well together. And so far, for whatever reason, these new pairings (at No. 1 and No. 3) have been working better."
Junior co-captain Kuharszky had impressive results this weekend at No. 2 singles, winning 6-3, 6-3 against Oregon and staying tough against a worthy San Diego State opponent to pull out an exciting 7-6 (7), 6-3 win.
Chu performed well in singles also, with two straight-set wins at the No. 3 position.
"Daniel was solid start to finish," Anger said. "Every time I looked over at his court, the scoreboard was ticking away in our favor. That's always nice to see."
The UW is now 9-1 in dual match play. Their next match will be on the road against the University of Minnesota on March 3.
