The University of Washington men's tennis team hopes to demonstrate its continued improvements in this weekend's matches against the University of Oregon and San Diego State at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies, whose only loss this season came against Ohio State nearly a month ago, has come back from that loss with a vengeance, and is now on a five-match winning streak.
The UW is currently No. 15 in the International Tennis Association rankings, while San Diego State and Oregon are No. 47 and No. 75, respectively. The team is careful not to take these rankings at face value, however.
"We know what to prepare ourselves for," said coach Matt Anger. "We know we can't just show up for matches against lower-ranked teams expecting to win. Every one of these matches is going to be close and hard-fought."
One of the things the UW is hoping to do in these matches is to start off strong in doubles, something that has been a bit of a struggle in the past few weeks.
"We're always trying to improve in the doubles," Anger said. "One team who has been doing really well at starting strong is Mike Ricks and Patrik Fischer at No. 2. But our No. 1 and No. 3 teams have been a little slower. We're trying to get more consistent."
Two of the seniors will continue to mark their places in the UW record books this weekend. Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu are currently tied for No. 1 on the UW career doubles win list. Slovic is also tied for third in combined doubles and singles wins, and Chu is sixth on that list.
There's no rivalry between team members, however.
"Chu is great," Slovic said. "The team chemistry this year is really good. We all get along well."
