Sophomore Nick Haughian, in this 2006 file photo, made his first Husky start Saturday against Cal in San Luis Obsipo with six-inning, two earned runs and three hit outing. Cal rallied in the bottom of the ninth to win 5-4.

The three major ways you can lose, we did,” said coach Ken Knutson. “We got blown out, then we lost with our bullpen and then we lost with our closer.”

The weekend came to a heartbreaking end when Cal Poly (8-6) came back from two runs down to win the game 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday.

Washington (0-3) jumped out to a good start, scoring four runs in the first inning. Cal Poly came right back in the bottom half of the first and scored two runs.

The Huskies struggled to put more runs on the board throughout the game. In both the third and the fourth inningS they got runners on third early, only to strand them on base.

Sophomore Nick Haughian held the Mustangs to just two runs on three hits in six innings of work. Sophomore Jason Erickson came in for two scoreless innings before junior Elliott Cribby came in to close the bottom of the ninth.

With the score sitting at 4-2, Cal Poly rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs and winning 5-4.

The Huskies struggled offensively throughout the weekend, putting up only one run on Friday and two runs on Saturday.

In their season opener on Friday, the Dawgs struggled to get their bats going against Cal Poly pitcher Marc Nobriga, who did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the fifth. The Huskies had just five hits and four errors in the 10-1 loss.

Starting left handed pitcher Nick Hagadone struggled to contain the Cal Poly batters. In his four and two-thirds innings of work the Mustangs scored eight runs (four earned) on six hits.

On Saturday the Huskies kept the game close through the eighth but could not match the Mustang offense.

Sophomore transfer Jorden Merry suffered the loss, giving up two runs on five hits over his five and two-thirds innings of work. When Merry left in the sixth, the game was tied 1-1. Sophomore Bryce Mooney came in for relief and made a series of mistakes that led to the Mustangs scoring twice more, and Cal Poly left the inning with a 3-1 lead.

Washington rallied to score a run in the eighth, but the Mustangs matched it in the bottom half of the inning, to return their lead back to two. The Mustangs eventually won 4-2.

Next weekend the Huskies head to the East Coast to play in the East Carolina Invitational, where they will face Duke (6-0), East Carolina (2-4) and St. John’s (0-3).
