Transition fashion: Winter to spring

The next month or two is, to me, one of the most frustrating times of year: the transition from winter to spring. By this time of year, I am ready to shed the thick layers and dreary days for my skirts and sandals and laying out in the Quad. Another challenge at this time is also finding something to wear in the not-winter-but not-yet-spring weather.

The first things to go are the dark colors and fabrics of winter.

Go easy on the black, navy, dark brown and dark grey. On the other hand, do not launch the pastels and pinks yet. Choose earthy tones such as blue, green, brown and red instead.

Remember to put away the wool, fleece, cashmere and flannel as well. Instead, opt for denim, corduroy, suede and other lighter fabrics. Winter jackets — like the puffy jacket — need to make their way out. Choose lighter jackets such as blazers, denim jackets and trench coats.

The key to this transition is layering. In February, the weather is still unpredictable and the best way to be prepared is to wear thin layers.

Men, try shirts under sweaters and collared shirts with lighter jackets and blazers.

For women, cardigans are a great way to go. Choose a basic cardigan and a few others and you will always have one to throw over an outfit.

Ladies, now is a chance to wear skirts. These last few weeks are your last chance to wear winter skirts. Especially with the weather slightly warmer, a skirt with hosiery and boots or a skirt with leggings or legwarmers is not as painful and cold as before. When March rolls around, pair your spring skirts with leggings.

The sun is unpredictable as well. Put rain boots away — yet near the front of your closet — just to be prepared. For now, opt for casual shoes like tennis shoes, loafers and flats.

When the sun is out, it is a great time to launch your sunglasses, which have been hiding all season.

Remember to put away gloves, scarves and winter hats. A scarf is appropriate only if it is a light scarf worn for looks and not warmth.

For a night on the town, ladies, you can re use those skinny jeans. Pair them with heels or flats, preferably in a metallic color, with a silky — not sleeveless — top and light cover-up.

Finally, remember this time of year is one of the best times to shop. End of the season sales are coming to a close, so make sure to catch the savings now before they go. Next, I opt for my favorite pastime — surfing the web, catalogs, magazines and the mall to get the early bird on new spring lines. g
