ASUW memorial taskforce successful, despite claims
A Nov. 30 Opinion article in your newspaper makes the claim that "although the senate eventually approved the resolution, nothing further has been done about the statue" ("Another memorial on campus?" Nov. 30, by Blythe Lawrence). The statement is absolutely false and does a great disservice to the many hard working volunteers that have dedicated their time over the last year to helping make the memorial a reality.
Members of the ASUW Medal of Honor Memorial Taskforce have presented the plan for the memorial to the administration, gotten it approved, fundraised more than $100,000 for the memorial from private sources and are working with an artist on the final version of the design. It is my hope that the hard work of these volunteers will pay off and the memorial will be finished by the beginning of the next academic year.
I must also point out that all of this information is not secret and would have been easily available had the writer decided to call the ASUW to inquire about the status of the project before making baseless claims that nothing has been done. It is unfortunate thatan article in your newspaperhad to resort to reporting blatantly wrong facts tohelp its argument and in the process diminished thework that many dedicated students havedone.
I hope that The Daily will join me in recognizing the amazing effort put forward by the student volunteers on the Medal of Honor Memorial Taskforce and in thanking them for the work they have done.

Every Seal Needs a Super Hero!
Please tell the people the truth about the Canadian seal hunt.
Dear Editor:
SEAL ‘HUNT’ FACTS
The hunt is the largest and cruelest marine mammal slaughter in the world.
Over 350,000 baby harp seals, 10,400 baby gray seals and 10,000 baby hooded seals were brutally killed in the commercial hunt in 2006. More then a million harp and hooded seals were murdered between 2003-2005.
There is only one reason for all this terrible shamelessness. It’s all in the name of money... There is no other reason for such savagery. The pure inhumanity, cruelty and senseless bloodshed of poor defenseless helpless babies is just plain greed. The wonderful world of the fashion industry believes wearing dead animals is so trendy! There are always ways to keep warm, even faux fur. And many other materials These poor seal pups need their fur more then we do! It is proven that sealers a.k.a. fishermen make 99.9% of their income from fishing not hunting seals. Although much of the government supports this horrific act, many Canadians and people around the world are appalled by the brutality and many do not even know it still is going on.
95% of the seal pups are under 12 weeks old, at the time they are slaughtered.. Many have never had their first meal or swim. Video evidence clearly shows Canadian sealers cruel and inhumane acts against baby seal pups. The methods used to are so horrific even the sealers do not want the public to see the gruesomeness. The defenseless infant seals do not stand a chance to escape from their attackers. In front of their mothers who are helpless to help them, they try to effortlessly to crawl away from being bludgeoned (w\wooden clubs or hakapiks-a club w\ a hook on the end of it). Or Shot, they have even stunned them (w/stun guns). They look up while clubs come down on their heads and cry out in pain, blood coming from their head, mouth, and jaws. Many are dragged across the ice with a hakapik hooks or boathook leaving them in agony.. Then they are often left to bleed out and suffer for hours. An independent team of veterinary experts studied Canada’s commercial seal hunt. They concluded that 42% of the cases they examined, the seals did not show enough evidence of cranial injury to guarantee unconsciousness at the time of skinning.. The seals are killed for their fur. Their carcasses are left to rot. Many are shot and fall into the water and suffer in agony while drowning..
As the sun rises above the eastern coast of Canada, the baby seal pups awake- snuggling and suckling their mothers. The nursery is alive. None aware of what will soon arrive. In their short 12 weeks of life they have never seen a human. As the men arrive at the baby nursery, the little pups look up. Just to see a club with a hook comes down on their head time and time again crying out as they bleed out. Still conscious and alive they are dragged with boat hooks and hakapik hooks across the ice, then skinned while alive. This must stop it is just barbaric.
Join us in our Canadian seafood boycott? Since they will not stop selling the fur, maybe the boycott will work, just until this barbaric slaughter ends. Plus let’s stop buying these poor animals fur, IT TRULY IS NECESSARY FOR THEM, NOT US HUMANS..
Sincerely,
Dawn Allen
