Husky swimmers cruise to finish

The UW women's swim team finished second at the Husky Invitational with a score of 1,225 points. The Husky Men took home fourth place, beating 24th-ranked Hawaii. No. 4 Michigan won the Invitational on the men's side, while No. 21 USC won on the women's side with a score of 1,369.

The Husky girls swam well. Junior Kim Jasmer took second in the 1650-meter freestyle with a time of 16 minutes and 34.98 seconds. Sophomore Erin Cambel took third in the 200 backstroke (2:01.38). Freshman Jessica Buchannon took fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.40). The team of Erin Cambel, Maggie Bever, Lindsey Sharp and Kim Jasmer took second place in the 400 freestyle relay (3:22.27).

The Husky Men were led by Sophomore Scott Spansail, who finished second in the 1650 freestyle (15:33.15). Senior Ivan Perhat finished fifth in the 100 freestyle and Junior Yonatan Cohen finished sixth in the 200 breast (2:02.48). John Banker also had a strong meet finishing 12th in the 200 backstroke (1:50.54). The men's field was unusually tough, as four nationally ranked teams competed in this meet.

The Husky swimmers will now get a well-deserved break. They do not swim again until Jan. 4, when they take on Arizona head-to-head.

Huskies heat up winter track

The University of Washington track team looked sharp in the first ever UW Winter Preview Saturday. The Huskies competed against local colleges and clubs in their first meet of the school year. Five-time All-American senior Norris Frederick set the provisional NCAA mark for high jump by clearing the bar at 7 1/2 and one-fourth." UW junior Daria Amiad-Pavlov beat last year's indoor long jump record by jumping 18-1 1/2."

The UW crowd got to see a lot of younger talent as most of the returning runners and sprinters chose to rest their legs and did not compete in this meet.

The young talent looked good.

For the men, freshman Sam Rucker got first in the 400-meter dash finishing with a time of 50.26 seconds. He was closely followed by freshmen Miles Timpe (50.84) and Kyle Acheson (51.46). Junior transfer Joe Turner also had a good day, winning the men's 300 with a time of 35.09 seconds.

The Husky women looked sharp as well. Former champion pole-vaulter Kate Soma Conwell won the pole-vault completion with a height of 12-6 3/4." Junior heptathlete Liz Fuller won both the shot put and the 60-meter hurdles. The UW 4x400 meter relay team made up of Junior Syreeta Martin, Sophomore Ankton and freshmen Christina Lee and Marie Tvare won the race.

The UW track team can train for another month before their next meet, The UW Indoor Invitational Jan. 19 of next year.
