Sunday afternoon's UW-UC Irvine contest was characterized as a "tough game" by junior guard Michelle Augustavo.
The UW women's basketball team defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters 87-69 to pull to 4-4 on the season, but foul trouble and rebounding issues caused some concern along the way.
"All in all, we will take the 'W,'" UW coach Tia Jackson said. "We did not want to allow UC-Irvine to penetrate as much as they did. We definitely did not want to give up as many rebounds as we did."
The Husky women had trouble controlling the boards, getting out-rebounded 40-37.
Fouls were also a problem early for the Husky women, as both sophomore guard Sami Whitcomb and freshman center Kali Bennett were each limited on the floor with three fouls.
"We got in foul trouble so early," Jackson said. "We were up right away to start the game and then we got in foul trouble and that kind of made us get back on our heels and play more tentatively."
Irvine made a game out of Washington's problems, going on a 15-2 run with 4:20 remaining in the first half to pull ahead 30-22. But the Dawgs came back strong and finished off the half on a high note when freshman guard Sarah Morton put up a buzzer beater to give the Husky women a one-point lead, 37-36, going into half-time.
Washington kept the momentum alive in the second half despite the physical nature of the game, thanks in part to freshman guard/forward Katelan Redmon's 12 second-period points. She led UW with 20 overall, a career-high.
Jackson likened the play of Redmon to a famous Chicago Bulls wing-forward from the 90s.
"She is a Scottie Pippen-type player for us, a point forward," Jackson said of Redmon. "I put her in any situation and she just does what I ask her to do. She is about as sound as they come."
Redmon wasn't the only player who flipped a switch in the second half.
Sophomore guard Sara Mosiman finished the day a perfect five-for-five from the field with 10 points, eight coming in the second period.
Junior guard Michelle Augustavo enjoyed shooting from afar, nailing three consecutive 3 pointers in the second half. She contributed with 12 points off the bench in only 14 minutes.
"I think it was a tough game; we were banging around a lot and it started to get crazy toward the end," Augustavo said. "We outlasted them, but they played hard."
The Husky women will close out their four-game home-stand tomorrow night against Pepperdine before traveling to Boise State Friday.
Notes
UW freshman forward/center Mackenzie Argens will be out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. The injury occurred during a Nov. 20 practice, UW coach Jackson said Friday. Argens will undergo surgery to repair the knee during winter break.
