Dawgs downed in Oklahoma

Last season, the Washington men's basketball team's most glaring weakness was that it could not win on the road.

And for now — it doesn't look like much has changed.

The Huskies ran into a buzz saw in Stillwater Saturday, as Oklahoma State took advantage of 20 Husky turnovers and used a barrage of 3 pointers to run UW out of the building in a 96-71 blowout in front of 13,172 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

For the better part of the first half, it looked like Washington was going to be competitive. A pair of Joel Smith 3 pointers and stellar post play from Jon Brockman gave UW an early spark, giving way to an early 19-18 Husky lead with 9:06 to play in the first half.

But for UW fans, the game was hardly worth watching after that. The Cowboys finished the half on a 30-11 run, fueled mostly by Washington's inability to defend the perimeter, and took a 51-32 lead into the tunnel.

OSU hit six 3 pointers in the final 7:23 of the half and finished the period shooting a blistering 63 percent, including 8-13 from beyond the arc.

Once the second half began, the game's outcome was a foregone conclusion and the Huskies played like it. The Cowboys led by as many as 31, continuing to find easy baskets and roaming free on the offensive end.

OSU shot 58.2 percent from the field for the game, a season-high for a UW opponent. The Cowboys connected on 11-21 from 3 point land, good for 52.4 percent.

Turnovers also continued to plague the Huskies.

Washington coughed up the ball more than 11 times in the first half, a problem that lead to the game getting out of hand early. UW finished with more than twice as many turnovers as assists — a 20:9 ratio.

In what seems to be a recurring theme for the Huskies this season, Jon Brockman and Justin Dentmon carried the bulk of the scoring load. Brockman finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, staying out of foul trouble and allowing himself to remain on the court for 37 minutes. Dentmon scored 17 points, and was 7-8 from the free throw line.

Washington returns home to face a ranked Pittsburgh team Saturday.
