UW study abroad student questioned in roommate's slaying

UW junior Amanda Knox is one of three people being questioned by Italian police for her possible involvement in the murder of British student Meredith Kercher, according to a Nov. 6 BBC News report ("Three quizzed over student death").

Knox, 20, and Kercher, 21, were roommates in Perugia, the central Italian city where they were both studying abroad. The other two detainees include Italian student Raffaele Sollecito, 24, and Congolese immigrant Patrick Lumumba, 37.

Kercher was found dead and half-clothed in the bedroom of her apartment Nov. 3 with stab wounds to her throat. She died fighting off a sexual assault, said Perugia's police chief Arturo De Felice, according to the report.

The police also said it was a "valid hypothesis" that one of the three people being question had confessed to the crime, according to a Nov. 7 BBC News report ("Meredith trio face more questions").

The three people in custody have been arrested on suspicion of murder and sexual assault.

She was studying abroad to improve her Italian, said junior Josh Horwath, a friend of Knox. The program was not affiliated with the UW, but she was going to receive credit for it.

"I believe that Amanda is an amazing person," he said. "Tragic things like this happen to people like her."

Knox is a West Seattle native and graduated from Seattle Preparatory High School in 2005. She is studying Italian, Germanics and creative writing and enjoys yoga, soccer and rock climbing, said her friend Madison Paxton. Knox was also a dean's list student last spring.

Knox and Paxton were neighbors their freshmen year in Terry Hall.

"She was really active and always preferred to bike or walk somewhere rather than take the bus," Paxton said. "She didn't like sitting still."

Detectives have five days to question the three people being held in connection with Kercher's death, according to the report.

With the UW's stupid student conduct code extension this year, I wonder what university punishment Eric Godfrey has in store for her when she returns. Like if she needs anymore crap when this ordeal is over. Least the Italian police report says she did not do it.

Also, someone needs to get her login info to privatize her online accounts (even though they probably been cached 10 times over). Like with those RAs getting fired over a football party through pictures online a year ago, this university is getting too much press with students on online networking sites.

Dear Jeff, a girl is dead, and your dear Amanda is not coming back to Seattle for a long, long time. She was a witness of a murder, probably an actor. She did nothing to save a life, and maybe she did something to kill it. She was doped and she was drunk, becuase she felt Italy was a the freedom from all ghosts she met at home. Too much ghosts, too much kills your culture is growing around. Take a deep breath, and start think about. She's to late to.

Detectives said that they believed that Ms Kercher may have been killed after refusing to take part in a violent orgy.

I thought American tabloids and newspapers were bad at smearing someone's image until today when I looked at all these British Newspapers... Jeez, I don't even know the girl, but I don't get the impressions British writers say about her. I think we should focus off this UW student and her perfectly healthy sexual mind and feel sorry for the British girl who was killed by that 37 year-old chef.

Friends claim she was an angel, all positive energy. Her fiction - (FICTION, yes, and yet....) posted on the net shows a darker more violent imagination. Is there no-one around here who knew her in three dimensions? Can I get a witness?

It is sometimes unfortunate we must receive our news through the media. Decide for yourself.

LB - you commented on amanda's "savage" stories, but have you actually read them?! In "Baby Brother", an older brother kicks out his younger brother because he believes the younger brother raped a girl. That's it. No gruesome rape seen, no disturbing images, not even verification that a rape was commited. Just an older brother disgusted that his younger brother could have possibly done this. Furthermore, the rape is only mentioned in the first paragraph.
How is this savage? Seriously - tell me how.
Before commenting on amanda's story, it would help if you'd actually read it.

Rather than playing judge, jury, and executioner, I would invite the public to entertain the idea that they do not have all the information, are not privy to all the facts, and that what they see in print is rarely the unequivocal truth. Please keep an open mind. She has not been charged, much less convicted, of anything.

The only thing we know with one hundred percent certainty is that Amanda Knox made up an elaborate story accusing an innocent man of killing her roommate. This woman who is being defended by people so vehemently almost sent a man to jail for the rest of his life. For this very reason alone I would shut my mouth about how great and sweet she is. She obviously has very little regard for the lives of other people.
