An incident last week at the Delta Upsilon fraternity is under scrutiny for potential racial motivation.
The Seattle Police Department (SPD) responded to a call last Sunday at 10 p.m. at the Delta Upsilon fraternity on 19th Avenue Northeast. According to a witness, a group of young men standing on the fraternity balcony were engaged in an exchange with a passer-by below. The men threw water balloons at two people, including the man with whom they were engaged in the exchange with, and allegedly yelled anti-immigrant slurs, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer.
The SPD has documented the incident as assault, a misdemeanor, and malicious harassment, a felony. According to the P.I., neither victim was located after police responded. Until a victim comes forward there will not be an SPD investigation. The incident is currently listed as a "witness account."
Delta Upsilon is conducting an internal investigation of the situation. Chapter President Kyle Sahagun, who was in a meeting at the time of the incident and was not aware of the situation until the police came to the house, said he hopes the investigation will be completed later in the week.
"We do not tolerate or condone any actions like this," Sahagun said. "We do not want this to affect the Greek system or UW."
Sahagun did not rule out the possibility that Delta Upsilon was wrongfully identified as the perpetrators by the witness.
"It could have been a neighboring chapter," he said.
If, however, a culprit is discovered in the Delta Upsilon house, Sahagun said disciplinary action will be taken.
"There will be repercussions for those involved," Sahagun said. "We hold ourselves to a higher standard."
