Senior outside hitter Stevie Mussie goes for a kill during this month’s win over Cal. The Huskies host Oregon State tonight at 7 p.m., aiming to move back toward first place in the Pac-10 as the regular season winds down.
After splitting two games on the road last week, including an upsetting loss to No. 8 USC, the Huskies are glad to return to Montlake.
Last week’s loss to the Trojans was not only a blow to Washington’s morale, but also dropped the Huskies one spot in the coaches’ poll, moving them from a previous No. 4 to No. 5.
Wednesday’s matchup marks the second time the two teams have faced each other this year. The Huskies swept the Beavers 3-0 earlier at Oregon State.
In September, the Huskies traveled to Corvallis to open up Pac-10 play against the Beavers. Seniors Christal Morrison and Stevie Mussie led the way for the Huskies, combining for 33 kills, and hitting a then-season-best .446.
In the first game, the Beavers proved to be a pesky opponent, tying the score 11 times before Washington took the lead about half way through and never looked back. The second and third games were more one-sided, as the Huskies claimed early leads and cruised to victory.
When they first met, the Huskies were undefeated and the Beavers had an 8-6, 1-1 Pac-10 record. Now, the Huskies have three losses under their belt, losing to Cal, Stanford and USC.
On Friday night, the Huskies will face the Oregon Ducks, who should pose a greater threat than the Beavers.
The last time the Huskies faced the Ducks was in Eugene at the Pac-10 opener. The Ducks started out strong by winning the first two games, and they appeared to be on track for sweep of the Dawgs.
The Huskies didn’t give up and rallied from behind to take games three and four before capturing the fifth and final game, 15-11. Senior Stevie Mussie led her team in the victory, recording 27 kills, including 15 in the final game.
The Ducks will enter Husky territory Friday with a bunch of confidence after recent wins against No. 8 USC 3-1 and then No. 10 UCLA 3-0 in Eugene. The Ducks will be looking to take down another with the Huskies.
After the Oregon school games, the Huskies will begin the first and second rounds of NCAA tournament action.
