The Daily of the University of Washington

Finding thanks behind The Daily

Being unable to decide if we were more thankful for cute shoes or pigs-in-a-blanket, we decided to reach a bit deeper into our gratitude and share what we're sincerely thankful for at The Daily.

Although a simple staff editorial cannot sum up all the big blessings, let alone the many, many of little ones, here are a few that come to mind:

Our readership — We know this comes off as a brown-nosing, PR act, but we love seeing students secretly read The Daily underneath their professors' noses. We love overhearing conversations about a Daily story and seeing its copies unfolded and sprawled across café tables. Thanks for reading, because it makes the following things possible.

Mike at Pacific Publishing — He's patient when we miss our deadlines, and he's "our last line of defense" when it comes to catching errors.

Janitors — When you stay up until ungodly hours of the night, begging Mike to print the paper three hours past deadline, it's easy to forget about the eight coffee cups cluttered around your desk, let alone the stacks of pizza boxes on the floor. So, thanks for cleaning up our crap, literally.

Eric Evans — Our Service Bureau manager, who always does his job so well.

Eli, the delivery guy — It's rumored that he faithfully delivers The Daily by himself every morning around dawn.

Kristin Millis — The publisher of The Daily. We're thankful for all of her journalistic advice, countless lines of encouragement and cooking us dinner every Sunday.

Jimmy John's — The sub shop that delivers to The Daily almost nightly. Without them, we'd probably go hungry.

Arla Shephard — The fantastic sub-editor assistant who saves all of our sub-editor butts by turning around stories, editorials, stats and teasers with only a few hours' notice.

Our jobs — Somewhere between learning, receiving a decent paycheck, "free speech" statements written on the walls and people breaking out into random dancing, we've learned to love this place.

Opportunity — Outside of us being thankful for the UW, the campus' support of The Daily has both encouraged and pushed us to constantly strive for the best publication we can provide.
