Washington swim to take on Cal tomorrow

The Washington swim team travels to the Bay Area today to take on seventh-ranked Cal and second-ranked Stanford tomorrow.

All three teams have won their season openers and currently stand at 1-0 for the season.

It's been over nine years since the last time Washington and Cal faced one another. In their last meeting, the Golden Bears defeated the Huskies, 129-76. Washington leads Cal 7-6 all-time in dual meets.

Today's meet will be a homecoming of sorts for Washington coach Whitney Hite, an assistant coach for the Bears' women for three seasons.

"Our depth is greatly improved this year and I'm looking forward to seeing us race against California and Stanford," Hite said.

The Huskies head into this weekend with momentum that stems from a sweep of Seattle University in October. The men finished with a score of 151-99 while the women swam to 143-101 victory.

Fresh faces made a big impact on the scoreboard against SU, as freshman Ariana Kukors won the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly and broke school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54:00.

The men's side looks to senior swimmers Ivan Perhat, Henry Hudson and junior Yonatan Cohen, who won their races in the last meet.

Cal's swim team features eight returning All-Americans, including Dominik Meichtry, the 2007 Pac-10 champion and national runner-up in the 200 freestyle.

The Huskies will be face the Cardinal Saturday, a team with national championship aspirations. In Stanford's season opener against LSU, the Cardinal just barely secured a victory with a finish of 139-123.
