The fourth-ranked Washington volleyball team (23-2, 12-2 Pac-10) didn’t let history repeat itself when they defeated No.7 California (20-6, 10-5 Pac-10) 3-1 Friday night at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

Senior outside hitter Christal Morrison goes for a kill during the 3-1 win over No. 7 Cal Friday night. Morrison led the Huskies to their victory with 17 kills and two service aces.
After suffering their first loss of the season to the Bears earlier this year in Berkeley, Calif., the Huskies were poised and determined not to lose two games in a row, especially at home.
One night after having its school-record 39-match home-winning streak broken by No. 5 Stanford, the Huskies rallied back to defeat California.
The Huskies got off to a slow start in the first game, with only eight kills and a .000 hitting percentage. The Golden Bears led by as much as 12-5 en route to a 30-16 win.
In the second game, the Huskies returned to their usual selves. After a 2-2 tie, the Huskies dominated the rest of the game, opening up a nine-point lead at 21-12, before sealing the win at 30-21.
With both teams having dominated one game each so far, game three proved to be a critical back-and-forth battle. The game featured 16 ties and five lead changes. Finally after a tie at 26-26, the Huskies scored the next four points to win 30-26.
In the fourth and final game, Cal took a brief lead at 11-10, but a kill by Becky Perry and four straight points by Megan McAfee’s service gave the Huskies the lead at 15-11. The Huskies would go on to defeat the Bears 30-22 for the victory.
Senior Christal Morrison finished the night with 17 kills and eight digs. She also recorded 44 attacks, adding to her career total of 4,398 and moving her ahead of previous leader Sonja Tomasevic (2002-05) for the all-time UW record.
Redshirt freshman Becky Perry also had a good night, leading the Huskies with a .316 hitting percentage and adding nine kills. Senior Stevie Mussie added 14 digs and seven kills, while freshman Jenna Hagglund led Washington with 35 assists.
The win against California still preserves Washington’s chances to earn the Pac-10 title. The Dawgs are just one-half game behind Stanford (13-2 Pac-10) in the race.
The Huskies will hit the road to face No. 6 USC Friday night and No. 9 UCLA Saturday night.
