Staff editorial: Proposed park fee increase unfair to lower class

Olympic National Park officials are suggesting raising the parking cost at Washington state's Hurricane Ridge and Hoh Rain Forest from $15 to $25, according to a Seattle Times article.

That's about a 65 percent increase.

Hurricane Ridge provides arguably the best mountain view accessible by car in the state of Washington. It's a must-see for everyone willing to make the trip.

Although the new prices are meant to help with park improvements, including its lodge, many argue that with the trend of high prices, the park will discourage the visit of much of the lower class.

Last year, the state of Washington made all of its day-use parks accessible for free, including parking at trailheads. Before removing the fee, parking only cost $5, which isn't close to the national park's proposed $25.

College students often find it hard to pay for $9 movie passes. For those of us seeking a little mountain air from one of the best lookouts available, $25 to see nature seems ridiculous. That's lunch money for the week — two weeks if you play your cards right.

The $25 pass is good for seven days. However, most trips made the park are just for a day, as it's a popular destination for road trips. If park officials must raise prices, they should at least create a more affordable, single-day pass.

Park officials are also suggesting increasing individual, or bicyclist, fees from $5 to $12; and public transportation doesn't go up to the park. Everyone except disabled people and senior citizens would get hit with higher fees, if the park approves the increase cost.

Despite the park's financial need, charging high-priced entrance fees defeats the purpose of the National Parks program; what's the point of creating accessibility for citizens to enjoy nature if many can't afford the price?
