Please, please, please stop. The style at the University of Washington is in dire need of help. I have always strived to be an individual, and I believe college is the best place for finding yourself, your own style and taste.
I can't help but notice that the average UW female's attire includes a North Face fleece, boring boot cut medium wash jeans (if not sweats), Uggs or flip flops, a Nalgene bottle and a chunky Tiffany's bracelet.
The average UW male's uniform includes carpenter jeans or khakis, North Face fleece and backpack, tennis shoes or Rainbow sandals and, of course, a Nalgene bottle.
I understand a North Face Fleece is warm and comfortable. I wear mine to the IMA all the time, and I love my Nalgene bottle, but there is a time and place for wearing these items, and that's the gym, not every day to class.
The lack of style and creativity on campus is hurting our culture and making those with just basic style stick out like sore thumbs.
Adding a little style to your wardrobe and following a few of the latest trends does not have to cost a fortune.
First, for the ladies: Every fall and winter season, tall boots are always in style, so if you don't already have them, invest in a basic pair of flat (for comfort) black and brown boots. You can wear them with anything, and they add instant style to any outfit.
Next, as an alternative to the fleece, buy a medium-thick, waist-length black jacket; it will go great with your boots and jeans. Then add a little detail to your outfit by building up a stock of pashmina scarves to add color to your outfits.
For guys: Your style can vary, but if you're still wearing carpenter jeans and don't have an after-school job as a construction worker, it's time to stop. Instead, invest in some nice jeans, like a pair of Sevens, which are expensive but last a long time and are instant lady-killers.
Secondly, go to American Apparel or Urban Outfitters and buy some basic cotton shirts in exotic colors like stone gray, robin egg blue or chocolate brown. Top off the outfit with a classic black jacket and basic black shoes and you will have instant style.
My favorite trends for fall are the ones that break the rules, like pairing a mostly black outfit with brown or navy blue accents. For those who want to be more daring on the way to class, mix black or brown with a touch of bold hues, like a bright purple or green scarf.
Trendy outfit of the week for college girls: black jacket, gray bubble dress, black leggings, brown boots and brown bag.
Be sure to check out more fashion trends coming to you next Friday.
