With Halloween weekend behind us, most college students have already been subject to the plethora of slutty female costumes running around half naked. From sexy kittens to naughty nurses, Halloween has become a holiday for girls to celebrate their inner skank.
And there's nothing really wrong with that — so long as you're over the age of 15.
In a disturbing trend, more and more costume companies and retail stores are offering risqué versions of traditional Halloween costumes geared toward a younger demographic. Costumes labeled "Punky Pirate Child" and "Fruity Licious Pumpkin Spice Child" are actually sold out on Buycostumes.com.
It's hard to be a fairy princess or a prima ballerina without showing off a little non-existent cleavage or 12-inch legs.
These types of costumes provide girls with a limited number of choices as compared to their opposite gendered peers. Girls don't get to be ninjas or Spiderman — why aren't boys dressing more provocative these days?
In an age where the heavily made-up Bratz dolls are soaring in popularity, this phenomenon among girls is not exactly a surprise. Daughters are begging their parents to buy them the hottest and most stylish clothes, toys and accessories, and this includes the latest in hyper-sexualized Halloween costumes.
But parents have an obligation to reign in children who insist on dressing like a streetwalker. The idea of young girls trick-or-treating door-to-door dressed as a "Devil Girl" or in a "Child's Chamber Maid Costume" is more than unsettling in a time where the unsolved murder case of beauty pageant darling JonBenét Ramsey is still fresh in our memories. Let's not encourage pedophilia, shall we?
As easy as it is to turn a pirate into a shipwrecked wench, or a sorceress into a wayward witch, traditional costumes are still available for those who look for them.
