Husky women's tennis made their season debut at the ITA Northwest Regional Tournament at Stanford University's Taube Tennis Center this past weekend.
All but three of the ten singles players competing in the tournament advanced out of the first round.
Junior Melinda Wong defeated Stephanie Galainena of Southern California University, but not without a fight from Galainena in a 7-6 first set.
Senior Tara Simpson faced similar difficulty in her first set, but prevailed against Diane Filip of Cal Poly, 7-6 and 6-3, respectively.
Sophomore Aleksandra Malovic was not quite as lucky in her first set as Simpson and Wong. Joyce Martinez Gutierrez of Sacramento State narrowly defeated Malovic, 6-7. However, Malovic did not let it faze her and easily beat Martinez in the next two sets, 6-0 and 6-1.
Freshman Ariel Ohno made her college debut at the tournament, playing Sarah Oudomvilay of University of San Francisco. Although she lost her first set, 3-6, she rallied back winning two consecutive sets, 6-2 and 6-0, which allowed her to advance to the next round. In the round of 64, Ohno competed but was unable to succeed against Stephanie Kusano, number 9-seed, from Cal.
Sophomore Joyce Ardies and senior Allison Rainey both won decisive matches against Silvana Dukic of San Jose State University and Bobbie Englert of Cal, respectively.
Aleksandra Krsljanin advanced from the first round due to an injury suffered by her opponent Nisha Dixit of University of San Francisco.
Wong, Malovic and Rainey played intense games against their opponents. Wong won her second set, 6-7, but lost the third set to Jennifer Yen of Stanford, 6-2.
Malovic won her first set, 3-6, but lost the next set 6-2 and suffered a heartbreaking 7-5 in the third set to Desiree Stone of UC-Davis.
Rainey played tough in the round of 64 against second-seed Melanie Gloria of Fresno State University, but the fickle hand of victory slipped away in spite of Rainey's best efforts.
In doubles action, Malovic/Rainey and Simpson/Wong defeated Sperry/Taylor of University of San Francisco, 8-3, and Kappel/Stone of UC-Davis, 8-6. Malovic/Rainey fell to third-seeded Burdette/Durkin of Stanford, 8-1. Simpson/Wong lost to Powaska/Rolly of Oregon, 8-1.
