UNICEF dance a success despite shortfall

After a slow start, the UW chapters of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) and the United Nations Children's Fund's (UNICEF) Dance for UNICEF last Friday turned out to be a success even though the clubs' monetary goal was not reached.

"Judging by the money raised, about 120 [tickets] were sold," said Lindsey Watson, NSCS treasurer.

The total amount raised by the dance fundraiser was $1,495.37. The proceeds will be donated to UNICEF.

"We are really proud because this is the first time we've had a dance, and we had two weeks to pull it together — it's awesome," said Ngoc Nguyen, the NSCS chapter president.

While the NSCS chapter did not reach their goal of $2,000, the impact their donation will make can be put into perspective.

According to the United States Fund for UNICEF Web site, $17 can immunize a child against the six major childhood diseases and $150 can provide education, medical care, nutrition and income-generation skills for an orphaned child for one year.

"From these figures, the money we raised can help provide immunization for 87 children," Watson said. "Or, [it can] provide education, medical care, nutrition and income-generation skills for nearly 10 orphaned children for an entire year."

Next year, the NSCS plans to host another charity dance that is at least twice as large.

"Now that we have experience planning for an event of this scale, we know we'll be back next year with an even more exciting and successful fundraiser," Watson said.
