Collegiate Scholars and UNICEF-UW join to host dance fundraiser tonight

Entertainment and activism come together tonight at Dance for UNICEF, a fundraising event organized by the UW Chapter of the National Society for Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) and the UNICEF-UW club.

"Every year we choose a charity to fundraise for and we set a goal for how much we want to raise," said Lindsey Watson, NSCS treasurer. "This year it just happened to be UNICEF, and we'd like to raise $2,000."

All proceeds are going to UNICEF.

"Absolutely everything that we make goes to UNICEF — we aren't keeping anything," said Watson.

In addition to music from Seattle radio station KUBE 93.3 FM, which will be deejaying the event, the program for the night includes a short presentation by a guest speaker from UNICEF and a film about the organization.

The purpose of the film and speaker is to show people that "the money is being well-spent," said Kathy Chharing, UNICEF-UW vice president.

UNICEF, which stands for the United Nations Children's Fund, was created "to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential," according to the UNICEF mission statement.

Since the agency depends on voluntary contributions, donations are integral to its survival, according to the UNICEF Web site.

This is the first time the UW's NSCS chapter has held a dance as a fundraiser, said Watson.

"Our goal is for 300 people to attend, but we would love to have more," she said. "And, of course, the room can hold a lot more than 300 people."

Promotion efforts include posters around campus, tabling in front of the HUB and posting fliers on Facebook, said Watson.

Planning and organizing the event has brought together NSCS and UNICEF-UW, as this is the first time the two groups have worked together.

The dance will be the UW's NSCS chapter's major fundraising event. The group is planning other smaller scale events during the rest of the year.

Watson has been planning the event for the past few months, she said.

Another highlight will be a raffle for a new Nintendo Wii. The raffle will be held at 11:30 p.m.

Although the primary goal of UNICEF-UW is to be involved with making the dance a success, "if anyone does want to get involved [in the club] it's an added bonus," said Chharing.
