#17 Oregon 79, #8 Arizona 77

Happy birthday, Mr. Big Shot.

This is the given nickname of Oregon guard Aaron Brooks, who hit a bank shot over two Arizona defenders with two seconds left to give the No. 17 Ducks a 79-77 win in Tucson, Ariz., on his 22nd birthday on Sunday.

It was the second big win for Oregon (16-1 overall, 4-1 Pac-10) in eight days. Last week, the Ducks upset then-No. 1 UCLA, again by a Brooks game-winner.

Brooks played all 40 minutes and finished with 21 points and six assists; he also hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 77 with 1:50 remaining. Bryce Taylor also had 21 points and Maarty Leunen had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the visitors.

Marcus Williams led the No. 8 Wildcats (13-3 overall, 4-2 Pac-10) with a career-high 34 points; however, his game-tying attempt from 18 feet missed at the buzzer. It was the second loss in three games for Arizona, who beat Oregon State on Thursday after losing to WSU last Saturday.

Oregon swept the Arizona schools on the road trip and will host the Bay Area schools this week, while Arizona will travel to Los Angeles to play at UCLA and USC.

#3 UCLA 65, USC 64

How good is the Pac-10? After New Year’s, the Bruins were the near-consensus No. 1 team in the country; after this weekend, they nearly dropped their second-straight conference game.

Down by one point in the closing seconds, UCLA’s Arron Afflalo nailed the game-winning 15-footer with four seconds left to give the Bruins a 65-64 win against host USC on Saturday.

On the previous possession, USC’s Nick Young converted a four-point play to give the Trojans (13-5 overall, 3-2 Pac-10) a short-lived 64-63 lead. Young led the hosts — who had two 10-point leads in the second half — with 14 points; Lodrick Stewart added 13.

Afflalo overcame a mediocre two-point first half and finished with 15 points. Guard Darren Collison had a career-high 17 points for UCLA (15-1 overall, 4-1 Pac-10) in front of the first sellout crowd at the Galen Center.

Both schools will host the Arizona schools this week.

Stanford 71, #23 Washington State 68

Another Pac-10 game this weekend and another game-winner in the closing seconds.

Stanford’s Anthony Goods hit a long 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left in overtime to give the Cardinal a 71-68 win over No. 23 Washington State at Maples Pavilion on Saturday.

WSU’s Kyle Weaver had what is believed to be the first triple-double in school history, with 14 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists and an added six steals, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Cougars (15-3 overall, 4-2 Pac-10) atop the conference standings. WSU’s game records before 1968-69 are incomplete, so school officials don’t know for sure if it was the first.

Goods’ 30 points tied a career high for the sophomore; he hit five 3-pointers on the night. It was Stanford’s third consecutive win by three points or less.

Derrick Low and Ivory Clark led WSU — who had won four in a row — with 16 points apiece; they will host Washington later this week. Stanford (11-4 overall, 3-2 Pac-10) will travel to the Oregon schools.

Oregon State 67, Arizona 59

In a battle of the bottom-feeders, someone was going to come away with their first Pac-10 win.

Sasa Cuic had 20 points and Marcel Jones added 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Beavers to a 67-59 win, breaking their four-game losing streak in Tempe, Ariz., against the Sun Devils on Saturday.

Arizona State (6-11 overall, 0-6 Pac-10) led by as many as eight in the second game, but missed 14 consecutive shots at the end of the second half; it was ASU’s seventh consecutive loss. The Sun Devils are off to their worst Pac-10 start in six years — next up, they face UCLA, USC and Arizona.

Jeff Pendergraph led the hosts with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and helped give ASU its first halftime lead in eight games.

Oregon State (9-9 overall, 1-4 Pac-10) will host Stanford and Cal this week.
