1. UCLA
The Bruins are the No. 1 team in the country and have maintained an undefeated record. The term "addition by subtraction" seems applicable with the NBA defection of Jordan Farmar. Josh Shipp and Arron Afflalo are healthy and dazzling, and it will take a mountain of effort to knock them off the top.
2.Washington
The baby-faced Huskies have already proven their mettle at home, going 7-0 on a prolonged stay at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The No. 8 team in the nation now has to prove they are a mentally tough team as they traverse the Cascades to play in-state rival Gonzaga.
3. Arizona
After getting toppled in the opening game of the season, the Wildcats have responded well, ripping off six in a row. Lute Olsen's young squad is gathering steam again and climbing the rankings behind the solid play of Marcus Williams and freshman stand-out Chase Budinger.
4. Oregon
Oregon gets the bump because of an early undefeated record. Maintaining that may be more of a challenge for the Ducks, who are loaded but lack real experience. They have already tried on their Cinderella shoes, but they look more like giant-killers by beating Georgetown and its 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert.
5. Washington State
Low and behold, the Cougars are sitting at No. 5 in the Pac-10 and have notched Gonzaga on their belt of early season victories to boot. Under the younger and still excruciatingly boring style of Tony Bennett, WSU is requiring teams to beat them with stifling defense and precise shooting.
6. California
The Golden Bears are showing that life without Leon Powe is not as easy as their record looks. At 6-2 and as the champions of the Great Alaska Shootout, Cal will not be a team to take lightly. But with Ayinde Ubaka as the only reliable shooter, it could be a tough year.
7. USC
The Trojans are making good on their dark horse label by beginning the season with a 5-2 record. The losses have not been unexpected, and they beat the teams they need to beat. And this is all without one of the best players in the Pac-10, junior Gabe Pruitt. Once he comes back from academic suspension, this team could open some eyes.
8. Stanford
Having two 7-foot twins manning the low post seems to have its advantages. And thus far, the Cardinal has been reaping those benefits. Coach Trent Johnson will be praying for more of the same, with his job in jeopardy after missing the tournament last season.

10. Oregon State
As long as the Beavers beat the teams they should beat, all will be fine for coach Jay John. When they start losing to SE Louisiana and Hawaii, though, that's when the panic should start to set in. If only Gary Payton and Brent Barry's kids were in college soon; that would help.
