It's finally here.
Our new Web site is up and running. It will be under constant renovation as we continue to improve its aesthetics and features, so don't be alarmed if you find things moving around during the next several weeks, but we are now uploading each day's content.
During this period of development, your feedback is essential to our improving the site, and any constructive ideas you can offer will be seriously considered. One reader already commented on the .pdf version of the paper we post on the top banner, indicating a preference for having more than the front page included in that .pdf.
He noted that "when The Daily website was 'offline,' and The Daily was distributed as printed via a .pdf file, it was like reading the real paper newspaper, and it saved trees. Now only the first page is available as a .pdf file ... Please bring back the entire .pdf version."
Done.
He brought up a good point. Many people prefer the look of the actual newspaper, but would like to save paper and read online if possible. Sparked by this suggestion, we're going back to posting a .pdf copy of the entire paper, available via a link on the home page.
Believe us when we say we'll take other suggestions just as seriously.
Feedback is actually one of the main improvements we've made to the site, as every story is now followed by a simple comment form. In addition to having a contact e-mail address for the author at the bottom of every article, you can now publish your two cents below the story.
Comments made will be moderated in much the same way as our letters to the editor — spam, offensive content or personal attacks of any kind will be filtered out or deleted immediately.
Another new feature we're trying out is podcasting. These short (less than five-minute) videos will cover a wide range of topics, anywhere from whimsical commentary on Huskies versus Cougars to an informative piece on Student Legal Services (both examples available now on the site). If you own iTunes, you'll find a link to subscribe to the podcasts, giving you updates as they become available.
Our stories are also now available via RSS feeds. For those of you new to this technology, RSS feeds are essentially a simple way of subscribing to content from a certain site (it actually stands for Really Simple Syndication), allowing you to receive updates when new stories are posted and consolidate content from your favorite sites. It's something major media outlets are starting to catch on to, and we're now making it available to our readers as well.
The archives are still a work in progress. For now, the link to our archives takes you to an old version of that page. We're working feverishly on transferring more than 20,000 stories to the new system, and when it's done you'll be able to easily search through every one of them by keyword, author or date published.
As for the future, we're looking to start regular blogs by columnists, and also to be able to bring you breaking news stories without having to wait for the paper the next morning. We want the Web site to be as interactive as possible, encouraging participation and ideas from all of our readers.
Just keep it coming.

Looks fabulous! Did you leave that "Where to buy Huskie tickets" part especially for my husband?
