Slumber Party reminds us what LSD can do

Now that you kids are in college at some point you're going to discover the hallucinogenic drug "acid," or what your parents call LSD. If you don't know its effects it completely alters your thinking. Your mind works in ways you never thought possible. In the 1960s when the drug first came into America's grasp it brought out creativity in anybody that had an open mind to experimentation and a working tongue. Its biggest influence was on the music scene as it started a whole new genre known as "psychedelic." Bands in this genre tried to write music that affected moods and created atmosphere that catered to the drug. One of the more popular bands in this genre was the Grateful Dead, but there were thousands of underground bands that represented the genre even more than the Dead ever could (especially since the Dead suck).

Detroit's Slumber Party might not be using the drug as we speak but they understand what the bands of that genre and time period were trying to achieve with music. The all-female group plays the moodiest, strangest, yet most melodic music ever to be associated with the genre. Their drummer is barely audible while the lead guitarist plays through heavy reverb that creates a sound that makes you sway instead of dance. Also their vocal harmonies would make Brian Wilson go crazy once again because they are simply ingenious.

Their second album, "Psychedelicate" on Kill Rock Stars, is the perfect background music for the partaking of any drug. Songs such as "Everyone Else I know" and "You've Gone too Far" will make anybody with working ears float on air (no, not literally) as the melodies provided by organs and softer than soft vocals flow in and out of ear canals. They do the complete opposite of "kicking out the jams" and that's just fine.

Don't expect their live show to be chock full of pyrotechnics and gogo dancers but do expect to fall in love with the band. Also the partaking of LSD before the show isn't suggested because being around sober people on acid really sucks.

The Slumber Party are playing on Saturday, October 27, with the Schoolyard Heroes at the Local 46. The show is $5 at the door ($1 with club card), and it starts at 8 pm.
